Ron Johnson Calls Bipartisan Bill to Address Supply Chain Issues “Stupid Policy”
“It is madness, this is stupid policy”

MADISON, Wis. – In a new interview today, Ron Johnson said the CHIPS Act, crucial bipartisan legislation that addresses supply chain issues and bolsters Wisconsin’s economy, was “stupid policy” and that he is “absolutely opposed to this CHIPS bill.”

“Calling a common sense, bipartisan effort to improve supply chains and lower costs for Wisconsin families a ‘stupid policy’ proves how out of touch Senator Johnson is with the needs of our state. Wisconsinites are fed up with Ron Johnson putting his own agenda ahead of Wisconsin,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Senate Communications Advisor Philip Shulman.

Additional Background

  • Semiconductor production is a $600 billion global industry that supports $7 trillion in economic activity.

  • The US’s biggest competitors are China, Taiwan, and South Korea.

  • The United States only manufactures 12% of the world’s semiconductors, a steep dropoff from the roughly 33% the country made in the 1990s.

  • Over the past two years the world has experienced a shortage of semiconductors, leading to supply chain shortages, particularly in the auto-industry.

  • Investing in this industry will help the US remain competitive with countries like China, and address the capacity issues that currently prevent the US from creating the most advanced chips.
