Gubernatorial General Election Fact Sheet: Tim Michels

MADISON, Wis. – Tim Michels is a radical extremist who is out of touch with Wisconsinites. A political insider, Michels has embraced the most divisive positions possible to appeal to Donald Trump and his base. As the Republican nominee for governor, he wants to ban abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest, fight against marriage equality, and refuses to back any common sense measures on gun safety to protect kids in school. He’s even said he’s open to overturning election results.

  • Abortion: Tim Michels wants to criminalize abortion, even in cases of rape or incest: Michels said the 1849 ban on abortion that doesn’t include exceptions for rape or incest is “an exact mirror” of his position. He has said it was “not unreasonable” for the government to force rape victims to give birth. And the ban he supports could even lead to doctors being jailed for trying to save a patient’s life.

  • Same-sex marriage: Tim Michels doesn’t think gay people should be out in public: Michels does not think that same-sex marriage should brought “out of your house” and has supported a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage [45:05]. He recently confirmed that he still believes in restricting the rights of LGBTQ Wisconsinites, as he did in 2004.

  • Education: Tim Michels called continuing to increase education funding the “definition of insanity.” Rather than proposing an actual plan to improve education quality, Michels has centered his plan for schools around a bill that would make it easier for people to sue public schools Michels’ plan could drain money from public schools and increase property taxes by $577 million.

  • Guns: Tim Michels supports allowing 18 year olds to be able to buy AR-15s, with no waiting period. Tim Michels opposed a bipartisan package of reforms that included background checks for people under 21 purchasing guns, and closed a deadly loophole that allowed domestic abusers to possess firearms. He has also pledged to lift restrictions on firearms, opposes an assault weapons ban, and said he will not support “red flag” laws backed by 81% of Wisconsin voters. He even insulted domestic abuse survivors by suggesting they would use red flag laws for spurious claims against their abusers, saying, “I want to make sure that law abiding gun owners aren’t having their guns confiscated, because a, an angry ex, ex spouse makes a complaint, ‘oh, he made a threat to me.’”

  • 2020 Election: Tim Michels will not protect Wisconsinites’ right to vote. Asked about illegally decertifying the 2020 election, Michels said that “everything will be on the table” and has backed the conspiracy theory that “President Trump probably would be president right now if we had election integrity.” He also will not commit to letting the people of Wisconsin’s vote for president count in 2024 if he is governor.
