Wisconsin Democrats Statement on Corporate-Backed, Anti-Abortion Megamillionaire Scott Mayer’s Impending Run for U.S. Senate
MADISON, Wis. — Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Arik Wolk released the following statement on the news that megamillionaire Scott Mayer has put together a campaign team and is planning to run for U.S. Senate in the Republican primary against megamillionaire Eric Hovde:
“Scott Mayer is a megamillionaire recruited to run for Senate by the state’s largest corporate lobbying group and right-wing billionaires to pass their extreme, self-serving agenda. Republicans are bracing for a battle of the megamillionaires that will leave their eventual nominee damaged and out of touch with Wisconsin voters. No matter who gets out of this primary, they won’t hold a candle to Tammy Baldwin and her work on behalf of Wisconsin families”
Here’s what you need to know about Scott Mayer’s entrance into the Senate race:
-
Mayer’s candidacy sets up a battle of the megamillionaires in Wisconsin. This is sure to be a “messy” and “bitter” GOP primary that conservatives in Wisconsin are calling a “Civil War,” and are saying will be a redux of the nasty Kleefisch v. Michels primary. He has already feuded with National Republicans, and attacked Eric Hovde for “liv[ing] in California,” saying that Wisconsinites don’t want “a Wisconsin senator that lives in California.” Some in-state conservatives have questioned if Mayer can be trusted, calling for him to be removed from the voter rolls for his spotty voting record. Meanwhile, despite months of effort from Steve Daines, Eric Hovde, and the NRSC to avoid a messy primary, they will be facing another bloodbath in Wisconsin between two megamillionaires.
-
Mayer helps lead the largest corporate lobbying group in the state who recruited him to run for Senate. They pushed him to run because they know he’ll help them cut access to health care and give tax handouts to wealthy corporations while screwing over Wisconsin workers.
-
Mayer is an anti-abortion politician who said he’s “unapologetically” and “absolutely pro-life.” He would enable a national abortion ban and has helped lead and financially back the groups and politicians fighting to keep Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion ban in place.
