Wisconsin Democrats on Wrongful Arrest Incident
MADISON, Wis. — In response to recently released video documenting the arrest by Kenosha Police last month of a man wrongfully identified as a suspect in a hit-and-run, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler and Kenosha County Democrats Chair Lori Hawkins released the following statements.
From Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler:
“Every Wisconsin family, no matter what they look like or where they live, should be able to safely and peacefully eat a meal in a restaurant without fearing for their safety. To watch the heartbreaking video of the mistaken apprehension by law enforcement of a Black father eating a meal at a Kenosha Applebee’s is to witness yet again why so many feel unsafe in their own communities. The need is clear for an immediate investigation and accountability for what took place—but the road to an America in which all of us can live with dignity and safety is longer and more difficult. Wisconsin Democrats are committed to building towards that necessary but distant future.”
From Kenosha County Democrats Chair Lori Hawkins:
“This devastating incident does not reflect the Kenosha I know we can be—a community bound by shared Wisconsin values, where every family can feel safe. The actions of law enforcement captured in this video demand investigation and accountability, but the work of building a stronger, safer future is a much greater project that will demand a commitment from each of us—and as Wisconsin Democrats, we are ready to do that work.”
