Wisconsin Democrats on the Anniversary of the Dobbs Draft Leak

MADISON, Wis. — On the second anniversary of the draft opinion leak in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the Supreme Court decision which overturned Roe v. WadeDemocratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler released the following statement:

“Two years ago, with the leak of the draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, America got word that Donald Trump was on the verge of accomplishing what anti-abortion Republicans and anti-freedom activists had long sought: the ripping away of reproductive freedom from millions of people nationwide, and an unleashing of chaos and cruelty on women across the country.

“The day that the Dobbs decision leaked, the clock began to tick. Reproductive freedom in America was about to detonate. The end of Roe reduced half of America to second-class status, and catalyzed a voter uprising in which millions of Americans have come together to fight for the fundamental freedoms that extremists like Donald Trump are hellbent on taking away. That fight isn’t over. Just yesterday, Florida Republicans enacted an extreme 6-week abortion ban, and last month the Arizona Supreme Court allowed a near-total abortion ban from 1864 go into effect.

“Wisconsinites are all too familiar with the precarity of reproductive freedom—and we won’t go back. The only path to defending Wisconsinites’ reproductive freedom, and to restoring the freedoms lost by women across the country, is to reelect President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Senator Baldwin this November. We know where Donald Trump, ‘proudly the person responsible’ for overturning Roe, stands. If he gets a second term, Trump and his allies are ready to pass a nationwide abortion ban. President Biden and Vice President Harris are the only candidates in this race who are fighting to restore the protections of Roe, and put an end to Donald Trump’s nightmare by ensuring reproductive freedom will never be ripped away again.”
