MADISON, Wis. — Ahead of the one year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler issued the following statement:
“One year ago tomorrow, the U.S. Supreme Court’s MAGA majority stripped away Americans’ rights to make their own reproductive health care decisions, shredding nearly fifty years of precedent and sparking a voter uprising that reverberates to this day.
“Over the last year, the fight to restore and protect abortion access has been fought on a state-by-state basis. From reliably red states to glimmering blue states, and every shade of purple in between, voters—when given the option—have chosen to protect their reproductive freedom. Here in Wisconsin, we saw Wisconsinites rise up to reelect Gov. Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul, and send Justice-elect Janet Protciewecz to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Soon, the case against Wisconsin’s archaic 1849 criminal abortion ban will have its day in court.
“The fight for reproductive freedom continues in 2024. All eyes will again be on Wisconsin. Over the past year, Senator Tammy Baldwin has taken on the disastrous consequences of the Dobbs decision head-on, and it is critical we reelect her next November so she can continue this essential fight. By reelecting President Joe Biden and Senator Tammy Baldwin, and by helping flip seats to ensure a Democratic House majority, we can open the door to passing Sen. Baldwin’s Women’s Health Protection Act—codifying the protections of Roe v. Wade into law and ensuring the next generation of Americans is not raised to be less free than their parents and grandparents.”
