HEARTLAND SIGNAL: “Millions of Midwesterners could lose health care coverage if Trump repeals ACA.”
“Former President Donald Trump said he is ‘seriously looking at alternatives’ to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which could cost over 7 million Midwesterners their health insurance. … According to statistics from the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, nearly every state in the U.S. have seen their health care uninsurance rates decrease since ACA’s implementation. Several states in the Midwest had rates below 10% by 2021, including Illinois (7%), Ohio (6.5%), Michigan (5%) and Wisconsin (5.4%). More than 40 million people are enrolled Medicaid expansion coverage because of provisions put in place by the ACA. Economic Policy Institute estimates that more than 7 million people in the Midwest would lose health insurance coverage if the ACA were repealed.”

“Trump, who remains the leading candidate for the Republican nomination despite facing 91 felony criminal indictments in four separate cases, put a post on his Truth Social account last Sunday that criticized Republicans who refused to ‘terminate’ the ACA—adding ‘we should never give up.’ […] Robert Kraig, executive director for Citizen Action Wisconsin, told UpNorthNews Radio the better path would be for Wisconsin Republicans to take advantage of an ACA provision that would expand and strengthen Medicaid—better known in Wisconsin under the name BadgerCare. For more than a decade, Republicans in the Legislature have blocked BadgerCare expansion, leaving Wisconsin as one of only 10 states in the country missing out on the extra federal funding that would cover more families. By not expanding Medicaid coverage, Wisconsin Republicans have caused the state to miss out on $1.2 billion in additional federal funds—in addition to billions more in previous budget cycles since the ACA took effect.”

“Six years after former President Donald Trump broke his promise to repeal and replace Obamacare, he is now promising to get rid of the health care law if he wins in 2024. Many Republicans in Congress have unsuccessfully tried to do so since its enactment in 2010. […] Republican Wisconsin Reps. Mike Gallagher and Glenn Grothman were both in Congress at the time and each voted for the 2017 Obamacare repeal proposal, as did Republican Sen. Ron Johnson.
“Eric Hovde, a likely 2024 Republican challenger to Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin, ran for Senate in 2012 on a promise to fully repeal the law and get the government out of health care entirely. ‘I believe we need to move to a free-market approach and allow people to be their own consumers of their health care needs,’ he said in one ad. ‘We need to repeal and replace Obamacare in its entirety and move in a 180-degree different direction, where people take on their own personal responsibility and use a free-market approach to solving our health care crisis.’”
