Tim Michels Is Radical And Wrong On Public Safety

MADISON, Wis. — Republican candidate for governor Tim Michels has proposed a radical public safety agenda that will make Wisconsinites less safe while he instead concerns himself with partisan pandering and peddling lies.

During the Republican primary, Michels was so desperate for an endorsement from the gun lobby that he lied about receiving an NRA endorsement. Michels has adopted stances that would make the NRA proud, including opposing a bipartisan package of common sense gun safety reforms that included background checks for those under 21 purchasing guns and made it harder for deadly weapons to fall into the hands of domestic abusers. He has also opposed an assault weapons ban, and refused to support “red flag” laws that are backed by 81% of Wisconsin voters.

But Michels didn’t stop there. When discussing red flag laws, which are often used as a response tool to protect victims of domestic violence from their abusers, Michels said that abusers shouldn’t have their weapons confiscated because an “angry ex, ex spouse makes a complaint. ‘Oh, he made a threat to me’ and then the police have to go confiscate his guns.”

In his first term, Gov. Evers has vetoed bills which would jeopardize public safety, including a bill that would have allowed loaded guns on school grounds that Michels has pledged to sign. Gov. Evers has provided over $100 million to law enforcement and violence prevention, including to every single local and tribal law enforcement agency in the state, and invested in violence prevention and victims services in high crime areas to address the root causes of crime and violence. Additionally, Evers increased pay for state troopers by 10%.

“Tim Michels’ agenda for our state includes more guns on school grounds and no common-sense gun safety reform,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Rapid Response Director Hannah Menchhoff. “Governor Evers is focused on working with local officials, law enforcement, and community organizations to find common sense solutions to keep Wisconsinites safe. The same cannot be said for Tim Michels’ extreme agenda.”
