ICYMI: Wisconsin Media Coverage of Eric Hovde’s Abortion Record
MADISON, Wis. — Yesterday, Wisconsin Democrats and leaders throughout the state held press conferences calling out Republican Senate candidate and California bank owner Eric Hovde (R–Laguna Beach) for his record on abortion. Hovde said he supported overturning Roe v. Wade, is totally opposed to abortion,” and “opposed legalized abortion,” saying he wanted to protect “life from conception.”
The events calling out Hovde’s record of opposing reproductive freedom came as he was in Washington, DC meeting with Republican Senators as the Senate GOP was blocking Tammy Baldwin and Senate Democrats’ bill to protect IVF.
See below for coverage of Eric Hovde’s radical anti-abortion record:
WKOW: Democrats Call Out Eric Hovde’s Past Record on Abortion: “On Wednesday, Democratic state Senator Kelda Roys (D-Madison) was joined by a group of medical students claiming that Eric Hovde, Baldwin’s first major Republican challenger for her U.S. Senate seat, has had a track record of opposing abortion rights. Students at UW-Madison argued that health care providers should be able to provide health care without judgment. They said actions to restrict reproductive care have impacted their ability to receive the academic training needed for their profession. Senator Roys spoke to Baldwin’s efforts to restore reproductive freedoms in Wisconsin and nationally.”
WBAY: Doctors Decry Senate Candidate Hovde’s Stance on Abortion Care: “Local health officials held a press conference to discuss senate candidate Eric Hovde’s stance on abortion rights. Hovde, a multimillionaire businessman, recently announced a bid to unseat Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin… Doctor Anna Igler is both board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist in the state of Wisconsin. Speaking at the Brown County Democratic Headquarters she shared her personal experience with abortion and in-vitro fertilization care.”
WisPolitics: Dems target Hovde on anti-abortion stance: “The Democratic Party of Wisconsin knocked GOP U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde for his abortion stance, with Sen. Kelda Roys arguing he’s ‘another out-of-state multimillionaire trying to climb the political ladder on the backs of Wisconsin women…’ During the news conference, Roys said Hovde will try to convince Wisconsinites over the next few months that he’s not as extreme as some think. But his record of anti-abortion advocacy and tens of thousands of dollars in donations to anti-abortion judges won’t fool voters, she said. ‘We cannot afford the risk of Donald Trump and Eric Hovde and their friends getting power in the federal government and passing a national abortion ban,’ she said.”
WPR: As 2024 campaign winds up, Democrats knock Senate candidate Eric Hovde on abortion record: “In a series of events Wednesday, Wisconsin Democrats denounced the abortion access record of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde, signaling that the issue of abortion is likely to again be central to Democratic campaign strategy through 2024. Bundled against the sudden Wisconsin cold on the steps of the state Capitol, Sen. Kelda Roys, D-Madison, argued that Hovde — who announced earlier this month he will challenge incumbent U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin for her seat in Washington — would also limit women’s access to contraception and certain fertility treatments… Elsewhere in Wisconsin, medical providers and advocates spoke in Green Bay and Milwaukee, making similar arguments about Hovde’s record on abortion and endorsing Baldwin’s record, which has included authoring a bill reenacting many of the federal protections for abortion access previously enshrined under the Roe v. Wade decision.”
Badger Herald: UW medical students criticize Senate candidate’s anti-abortion rights stance at news conference: “Wisconsin State Sen. Kelda Roys and University of Wisconsin medical students held a press conference on the Wisconsin State Capitol steps Wednesday to address U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde’s anti-abortion rights stance, according to WisDems… Similar events were also held Wednesday in Milwaukee and Green Bay, according to WisDems.
