REMINDER: Brad Schimel Failed to Keep Wisconsin Safe
MADISON, Wis. — We’re back to remind you of Brad Schimel’s years-long failure to keep Wisconsin kids, families, and communities safe.
“Brad Schimel made a career out of failing survivors of sexual assault, but his dangerous public safety record doesn’t end with the victims he let down,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Deputy Communications Director Haley McCoy. “Brad Schimel let dangerous criminals off with light sentences and cut plea deals with child predators. It’s a record of corruption to the extreme from an extreme politician.”
Here’s more about Brad Schimel’s failed public safety record:
- No Jail Time For Domestic Abusers: Brad Schimel has a record of giving out light sentences to domestic abusers, including allowing a man charged with physically abusing a child and abusing his partner to walk with no jail time.
- Corrupt Plea Deal For Child Predator: As a district attorney, Brad Schimel handed out a plea deal to a man caught with thousands of files of child pornography after taking campaign cash from his defense attorney.
- Blamed Child Victims For Their Assault, Then Recommended No Jail Time: Brad Schimel routinely cut plea deals with child molesters, once even blaming two underage survivors for using “bad judgment” when they allowed themselves to be alone with their abuser. In another case, Brad Schimel again recommended no prison time in a child sexual assault case because it was “a first time” and he wanted to give the man convicted of sexually assaulting a child“an opportunity to succeed.”
- Sexual Assault Kit Failure: Brad Schimel only tested nine out of over 6,000 backlogged rape kits in his first two years as attorney general, opting to “wait for a bargain price” before seeking justice for victims. Schimel was then caught lying about his failure to test thousands of rape kits promptly.
- Ignore Sexual Assault Kits In Child Assault Cases: But Brad Schimel’s rape kit failures go back to his time as Waukesha County District Attorney, when Schimel failed to test 26 kits, over 20 of which involved crimes against children.
