GOP Convention Speaker Spread 1/6 & QAnon Conspiracies

MADISON, Wis. — This week, the Republican Party of Wisconsin announced “strong Republican leader” Mayra Flores as a featured speaker at next month’s state GOP convention in La Crosse. Flores, who served just over six months in Congress before being defeated last November, previously shared conspiracy theories online relating to the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol and QAnon.

  • On 1/6, Flores posted on Twitter that the attack “surely was caused by infiltrators.” According to reporting from CNN, Flores also retweeted claims the attack was a “set up” orchestrated by Antifa.
  • In at least four cases documented by CNN, Flores posted QAnon hashtags. Further reporting from Media Matters found Flores had repeatedly posted a QAnon slogan on Instagram.

“Mayra Flores has dabbled in all the extreme conspiracy theories we’ve seen favored by Wisconsin Republicans in recent years—making her the perfect headliner for next month’s state GOP convention,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Communications Director Joe Oslund. “In the wake of yet another statewide embarrassment at the polls, the choice to put a conspiracy theorist like Mayra Flores front and center proves that the Wisconsin GOP has learned nothing—they’re as extreme and out of touch with Wisconsin voters as ever.”
