Coming off the worst week of the campaign trail for Donald Trump, his Vice Presidential nominee Mike Pence has a nearly impossible chore: shifting the narrative from the outlandish behavior, 3AM tweets, and outlandish accusations of his running mate.
Tonight, the question for many is whether or not Mike Pence will fall on his sword to defend his running mate’s indefensible and offensive policies and statements, or will he hang his running mate out to dry? Take a look at just a few of the controversial items Mike Pence will have to navigate tonight:
Trump on African Americans:
- In just one day a few weeks ago, Trump called a pastor in Flint “a nervous mess” simply because she dared to tell him not to make a political speech in her church. He attacked Colin Powell as “weak” because he called Trump “a national disgrace” and “an international pariah.” And he once again attacked President
- Barack Obama with his same old outrageous birther lies – refusing to acknowledge that our President is an American.
- Donald Trump repeatedly refused to disavow the support of perhaps the most notorious white supremacist group, the Ku Klux Klan, as well as its former leader, David Duke –four times in one interview.
Trump on Women:
- Trump, on FOX host Megyn Kelly: “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes…blood coming out of her wherever.“
- Trump said there should be “some form of punishment” for women who have an abortion.
- Trump has called women “fat pigs” and “disgusting.”
Trump on Latinos:
- Trump launched a series of racially tinged attacks on federal judge Gonzalo Curiel, saying he could not do his job because he was of “Mexican heritage.”
- Trump plans to deport millions of immigrants and promises to start building a wall within his first 100 days in office.
- Trump, on immigrants crossing the border from Mexico: “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
Trump on Muslim Americans:
- Trump attacked Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the parents of a Muslim American war hero.
- Trump has called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”
The task is very different for Sen. Tim Kaine, who is prepared to share an optimistic vision for the next four years. Kaine will outline Sec. Clinton’s 5-point plan to build an economy that works for everyone—not just those at the top—with good jobs and a good education available in every zip code. He’ll also present Clinton’s concrete plan to deal with the threat of ISIS and keep Americans safe.
Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine believe that we are stronger when we lift each other up so that everybody plays a role in creating America’s future, and as president, Hillary will bring Americans together to solve our biggest challenges.
