The following is a statement from Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate on U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman ruling photo ID unconstitutional.
“Today is a victory for all Wisconsinites as one of the highest courts in the country ruled Scott Walker’s photo ID law in violation of the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the law.
“Scott Walker has made it publicly known that he will attempt to push through photo ID in a special session, but today’s ruling shows that photo ID is a solution in search of a problem. The Honorable Judge Adelman’s ruling explicitly states that the defendants couldn’t point to a single case of in-person voter fraud and that evidence produced by the plaintiffs shows that in-person voter fraud does not occur in the state of Wisconsin.
“Any attempt to push through a photo ID law through a special session only shows that Scott Walker and his Republican Party have a clear motive to change the rules and rig the November election in their favor by placing an unjustifiable burden on the right to vote. Not only are restrictive measures like the photo ID law an affront to democracy, they are a clear attack on the voting rights of seniors, veterans, and students.
“The people of Wisconsin would be better served with a special session focused on fixing Scott Walker’s massive jobs failure. The past legislative session left dozens of Democratic bills on the table calling for common sense solutions to the jobs crisis facing our state. The bottom line is that laws should fix problems, not elections.”
