Unemployment is up in 69 of 72 Wisconsin counties and all but two of the state’s 32 largest cities.
That’s according to the most recent monthly federal jobs data, released Wednesday by the state Department of Workforce Development.
The news comes on the heels of another recent jobs report that shows Wisconsin was ranked second in the nation in job loss in February and ranks 35th in the nation in job creation over the most recent one year period.
And today, a U.S. Department of Labor report showed that the national economy reached a major milestone last month, when private sector businesses regained all of the jobs lost in the Great Recession. Despite Scott Walker’s central campaign promise to create 250,000 new private sector jobs, Wisconsin lags the nation in job creation and has yet to recover all the jobs lost in the national economic crisis.
Despite Wisconsin’s dubious economic rankings, which include 9th out of 10 states in the Midwest on job growth and 48th in the nation in new business start-ups, Scott Walker just yesterday absurdly proclaimed that “by nearly every measure, Wisconsin’s economy is growing” under his leadership.
“All signs point to a strengthening national economy, but because of Scott Walker’s inattention to jobs as he restricts voting rights and perpetuates wage inequality, middle class Wisconsin families aren’t experiencing the same kind of robust economic recovery that our neighbors in places like Minnesota are seeing,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Friday. “Scott Walker may be satisfied with being 35th in the nation in jobs, and rising unemployment across most of the state, but Wisconsin families are not.”
