Following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Executive Director Maggie Brickerman on International Women’s Day.
“The Republican “War on Women” in Wisconsin continues as Republican men float insidious legislation that would mandate invasive, unnecessary medical procedures for women seeking safe and legal abortion. The men who are proposing it have no interest other than taking away the rights of Wisconsin women, including victims of rape and incest, and undermining the ability of women and their doctors to make personal medical decisions.
“Today is International Women’s Day and it is important to remember the backward steps that women in Wisconsin have taken under Scott Walker and Republican rule. Women’s health clinics have been shuttered. Access to basic health care services like mammograms and cervical cancer screenings has been curtailed. Pay equity protections have been gutted. Jobs have been lost in a way that hurts women disproportionately.
“Brave women and men fought to get us this far. So we say to Wisconsin’s Republicans today that not only will women not go back to being second-class citizens — we will fight attempts to roll back our rights at every turn.”
