Provision Key to Reforms in Affordable Care Act
On the second anniversary of its passage, a new Web video by the Democratic Party of Wisconsin thanks Tommy Thompson for his unequivocal support for the individual mandate — the essential provision in the Affordable Care Act that makes the groundbreaking reforms in the new law possible.
Thompson was an early and vocal supporter of the individual mandate, and as Secretary of Health and Human Services Thompson granted the waiver to then-Governor Mitt Romney that allowed him to implement it in Massachusetts. Commentators have noted that RomneyCare is the blueprint for the Affordable Care Act.
In the video, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate is joined by everyday Wisconsinites who say, “Thank you, Tommy,” for helping to make Obamacare possible.

00:00 – Hello and thank you for joining us — I’m Mike Tate, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
00:08 – On the second anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, we thought it necessary to thank someone special who supported the act during its inception, namely former governor and now U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson.
00:17 – Simply put, Tommy, without your support for the individual mandate and President Obama, the Affordable Care Act would not be possible.
00:23 – Because of Tommy’s commitment, thousands of middle class families, seniors and the working poor now have access to healthcare, and are protected from discrimination for pre-existing conditions by big insurance companies.
00:33 – As you’ll remember, Tommy stood strongly behind this act as the director of the federal division of Health and Human services.
00:38 -This law not only saves lives, it saves Americans money and protects them from insurance companies who would rather deny coverage and grow their bottom line than to pay for services that increase the quality of life of our citizens.
