GAB Complaint Filed Today
MADISON – The Democratic Party of Wisconsin today submitted a complaint against Dan Kapanke, alleging that the state senator and Republican candidate for the Third Congressional District employed a money-laundering scheme to pay off debts he owes the City of La Crosse.
The complaint alleges that Kapanke used a charitable foundation to pay down debt associated with improvements to the city-owned baseball field.
In previous interviews, Kapanke has said that the foundation would receive money from those organizations that employ lobbyists.
A review by the DPW of the 2009 tax records for the charitable foundation show that the nonprofit made a payment to the City of La Crosse of $16,930.80, the exact amount of Kapanke’s scheduled payment for his debt obligation.
In a 2007 interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Kapanke said of the foundation that, “I don’t see any problem, as long as the money is not going to benefit me.”
In fact it has.
“Dan Kapanke is using his foundation to launder money from those corporations that employ lobbyists,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Wednesday. “This is not lawful. The Coulee Region deserves better.”
