Growing Chorus Calls for Independent Investigation (8/2/10)

Aug 01, 2010

Truth More Important Than Scott Walker’s Political Career

MADISON – Scott Walker initially called for caution in the midst of an ongoing probe but reneged on his own words over the weekend by leaking what he claims is the cause of the O’Donnell Park tragedy – before the completion of his own investigation.

Walker already awarded a no-bid contract to a politically-connected engineering firm to assist in the probe and his secretive and unaccountable administration has rebuffed requests by news media and elected officials to see records related to O’Donnell Park.

But the truth will out. And in the wake of Walker’s baldly political maneuvering, the chorus is growing for an independent review of the accident, in which a concrete panel fell from the structure, killing a 15-year-old boy and seriously injuring two others.

By a 10-8 vote last Thursday, a majority of Milwaukee County supervisors voted for an independent investigation – including Walker ally Mark Borkowski. Even reliably on air personalities at Walker-friendly WTMJ radio in Milwaukee believe the truth would be better served by an independent investigation.

“The residents of Milwaukee County deserve an open and independent investigation into the tragedy at O’Donnell Park,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Monday. “A human life and the safety of Milwaukee County residents is far more important than Scott Walker’s political career.”
