DPW Chair Tate Statement on
Scott Walker’s Mismanagement of Milwaukee Parks

MADISON – A recent Milwaukee County audit cites at least $200 million of deferred maintenance as the cause of widespread deterioration in parks across the county, and recommends selling park land to developers as a potential solution. Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate released the following statement in response to the report:

“It’s only been a matter of weeks since Scott Walker turned the Milwaukee County Courthouse into an Outhouse, and he’s failed the county again. Because of Walker’s incompetence, the Milwaukee County Park System, once a national model and source of pride, is in a state of disrepair.

“Somehow, Walker has managed to defer at least $200 million in maintenance and bring park spending to an all-time low, despite the fact that overall spending has grown every year under his watch.

“Not only that, but Walker has repeatedly attempted to lay off maintenance workers, most recently in his 2010 budget proposal which cut 20 workers without replacements. Now the county may be left with the totally unacceptable option of selling park land to developers to cover for Walker’s failed leadership.

“Scott Walker’s inability to make tough, long-term decisions leaves little doubt that he is the worst executive in the State of Wisconsin. From the courthouse scandal to this latest display of ineptitude, the list of reasons why Wisconsin cannot afford to elect Walker Governor continues to grow.”
