Walker’s Reaction to Report on Dire Fiscal Future:
Slash Salaries and Benefits for Workers
MADISON – What was Scott Walker’s first reaction to a new report outlining MilwaukeeCounty’s dire long-term financial future? ‘Slash salaries and benefits for working families.’
According to Walker, working families won’t mind the light paychecks and missing benefits either.
“Most workers are just happy to have jobs, even if there are changes in the wage and benefit structure,” Walker told a reporter today. (Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 3.24.09, http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/41719107.html)
“Rather than coming up with a real plan to solve his county’s financial problems, Scott Walker wants to put it all on the backs of working families, by slashing benefits and salaries,” said Joe Wineke, Chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. ”At a time when families need to make every dollar count, it is incredible that Walker actually wants to cut their paychecks.”
This isn’t the first time Walker has fought against the needs of working families in Wisconsin.
Walker is leading the fight against the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that will create or save 70,000 jobs for Wisconsin and 12,000 jobs for MilwaukeeCounty.
Walker has banned county staff from working with the state Office of Recovery and Reinvestment on any efforts to create jobs to MilwaukeeCounty through the Recovery Act. Walker has even threatened to sue his own county board if it accepts MilwaukeeCounty’s share of the job creation funds.
“Scott Walker is against new jobs, against decent wages, and against working families,” said Wineke. “When it comes to understanding the needs of hard-working Wisconsin families, Walker is woefully out of touch.”
