Tommy Thompson Turns on McCain Campaign

After Spending Days with McCain’s Low-Road Campaign
in Wisconsin, Governor Thompson Issues His Verdict

MADISON – Former Governor Tommy G. Thompson issued a stunning rebuke of John McCain’s presidential campaign in an interview printed in The New York Times yesterday, revealing that he doesn’t know a single person in Wisconsin who is happy with the McCain campaign. When asked if he was happy with the campaign, he simply replied, “No.”

“Last week Tommy Thompson got an up close and personal look at John McCain’s low-road campaign and he didn’t like what he saw,” said Joe Wineke, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair. “Tommy Thompson knows just as well as anyone in Wisconsin that voters are craving steady leadership and real solutions in a time of economic crisis, not the disgusting, false character attacks that John McCain is leveling on Barack Obama.”

Thompson’s revelation followed a two day, three-stop McCain-Palin swing through Wisconsin, in which the former Governor served as McCain’s warm-up-act. The events were marked by incendiary outbursts from angry supporters and deplorable character attacks on Barack Obama, perpetuated by McCain and his running mate. The outbursts have been widely criticized by the media, political observers, and even some of McCain’s supporters.

“McCain’s campaign has claimed that The New York Times is in the tank for Barack Obama, I wonder if they now think Governor Thompson is in the tank for Obama as well,” said Wineke.

Obama has shown steady leadership during this crisis and offered concrete solutions to move the country forward. Obama has unveiled plans to give 95 percent of workers and their families a tax cut, eliminate income taxes for seniors making under $50,000, bring down the cost of health care for families and businesses; and create millions of new jobs by investing in the renewable energy sources.

John McCain has been erratic and unsteady since the financial crisis began – staggering from position to position and trying to change the subject away from the economy by launching false character attacks.

Today, less than twelve hours after his campaign announced that Senator McCain would finally have some new ideas on the economy, he decided that it was more important to give a new political speech about where he is in the polls.
