Rep. XXX Votes to Delay Critical Care for Rape Victims

Feb 05, 2008

Every day, an estimated 40 women and children are raped in Wisconsin. (Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault) It has been 13 days since Republicans again stalled CCRV, now leaving an estimated 520 women without the critical care they need.
This week, Rep. XXXX voted to delay a bill that provides critical care for rape victims for nearly a month. The bill, which XXXX initially supported, could have been sent immediately to the Senate and passed next week. Instead it will be delayed until the Assembly meets next – 26 days from today.

“The Assembly’s job was done, but instead of letting the Compassionate Care bill take its course and move on to the Senate, Republicans decided to stall it yet again,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chairman Joe Wineke said. “From day one, Republicans have tried to stand in the way of the Compassionate Care bill, and Rep. XXXX has stood by them the entire way.

“They’ll try to say this is a small delay, but tell that to the 40 women and children that are raped every day. They need this care and they need it now.”

The Compassionate Care Bill ensures that hospital emergency rooms provide rape victims the American Medical Association’s minimum standard of care, including information about and access to emergency contraception – a standard that two thirds of Wisconsin hospitals do not currently meet.

“Apparently XXXX thinks it’s alright to protect rape victims, just not now,” Wineke said.  “There is no reason for this bill to stay in the Assembly any longer. Women in this state should be outraged at the nerve of extreme Republican leaders and the legislators like Rep. XXX that continue to support them.”
