Visits to Wisconsin from the President and Vice President in the last week put a spotlight on the push to ram Trumpcare through Congress. While the leaders of the Republican Party touted the bill that would yank affordable health care coverage away from millions of Americans, it turns out they weren’t telling the whole truth about Trumpcare’s impact for those with pre-existing conditions.
Independent fact-checkers found Republican leaders and their conservative allies statements about Trumpcare misleading with regards to health insurance for people with pre-existing conditions.
“In Wisconsin on June 10, 2017, three days before a Badger State visit by President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence repeatedly bashed Obamacare.
“And in his speech at a Milwaukee company that helps build and equip long-term care and senior-living communities, Pence pledged:
“‘We’re going to make sure that every American with preexisting conditions has access to the coverage and the care that they need — no exceptions.’
“It’s a bold claim, though made in the form of a prediction, so we won’t put it to the test on the Truth-O-Meter.
“That said, Pence’s statement is misleading based on the Republican replacement for Obamacare that passed the U.S. House of Representatives, which experts see as making insurance unaffordable for many people with preexisting conditions.”
Other fact-checkers found misleading statements about health insurance for people with a pre-existing condition from the pro-Speaker Ryan group, American Action Network, Rep. Robert Pittenger of North Carolina, and President Donald Trump.
“Not only is Trumpcare being re-written behind closed doors, Republicans are now refusing to tell the truth about what the House version of the bill would do for the most vulnerable people in our state,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesman Brandon Weathersby. “As we get closer to a vote on the Senate version of Trumpcare, the people of our state deserve to know the truth about what is in the secret bill and where their state’s leaders stand on the issue.”
